Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has secured a landmark contract to supply 26 additional Coradia Max double-decker trains to the Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW). The agreement, valued at approximately 500 million euros, also includes comprehensive maintenance services for the trains until the end of 2055, reinforcing Alstom’s commitment to long-term support and operational reliability. Delivery of the new trains is scheduled between mid and late 2028, further expanding Baden-Württemberg’s regional rail capabilities.
This latest order builds on an option initially set in May 2022, when SFBW placed a major contract for 130 Coradia Max trains along with Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance program. That contract allowed for up to 100 additional trains, of which the current 26-train order forms a key component, demonstrating sustained investment in modernizing regional rail infrastructure.
Gradual Introduction from 2026
The double-decker trains are slated for phased deployment beginning December 2026, gradually entering service across multiple routes in Baden-Württemberg. They will operate under DB Regio Baden-Württemberg and Arverio on rail network 35’s Lot 1 and Lot 2, which encompasses the Stuttgart-Bodensee-Netz, covering a range of Regionalexpress and Metropolexpress lines.
Designed for high-speed regional travel, the Coradia Max reaches top speeds of 200 km/h, making it one of the fastest options in German regional transport. Each train is comprised of four cars, including two double-decker control cars and two single-deck intermediate cars, accommodating a total of 380 passengers over a length of 106 meters. The trains are capable of multiple traction operation, ensuring flexibility and efficiency across various service routes.
Passenger Comfort and Modern Amenities
The Coradia Max emphasizes passenger comfort and accessibility. Interiors are equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, multiple charging stations for mobile devices and laptops, and reading lamps. Passengers can enjoy lounge areas, conference and family compartments, as well as spacious multi-purpose sections for luggage, prams, and bicycles. Wide single-leaf doors enable rapid boarding and alighting, while step-free access and lifts ensure barrier-free travel for passengers with reduced mobility.
These trains also integrate state-of-the-art signalling and automation technology as part of the “Digital Hub Stuttgart” initiative, Germany’s first fully digitized railway hub. The trains will feature the distinctive bwegt color scheme of white, yellow, and black, enhancing visibility and brand recognition across the regional network.
Advanced Design and Energy Efficiency
The Coradia Max represents a low-floor, high-performance electric multiple unit (EMU) with a modular design, allowing operators to customize both interior layouts and technical configurations according to operational requirements. With over 500 Coradia Max trains already ordered across Europe, the series has proven its versatility and reliability in regional transport. The design prioritizes energy efficiency without compromising speed or comfort, aligning with sustainable mobility goals.
Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance program under this contract offers tailored solutions, from technical support and spare parts provision to fully outsourced maintenance services. Globally, Alstom maintains more than 35,500 vehicles, demonstrating its expertise in managing both Alstom and non-Alstom rail assets. This long-term commitment ensures the highest levels of service, operational reliability, and passenger satisfaction.
The 26-train order, booked in Alstom’s third quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year, is part of a trio of contracts announced in January 2026, collectively valued at around 2.5 billion euros, reflecting Alstom’s continued growth in the European rail sector.
Conclusion
With the addition of 26 Coradia Max double-decker trains, Baden-Württemberg is set to enhance its regional rail services, offering passengers faster, more comfortable, and highly accessible travel options. Alstom’s advanced train design, coupled with long-term maintenance support, underscores a strategic investment in sustainable, high-performance regional transport, solidifying the state’s position at the forefront of modern rail mobility in Germany.
