Glasgow to Zurich Direct: Edelweiss Launches New Swiss Route for Summer 2026

Glasgow Airport welcomes Edelweiss with a new twice-weekly direct service to Zurich starting May 2026.

For many Scots, a trip to Switzerland has traditionally involved a multi-leg journey through London or Amsterdam. But starting May 29, 2026, that is about to change. Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leading leisure airline and a sister company to Swiss International Air Lines, has officially confirmed it will connect Glasgow directly to Zurich.

The service, operating twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays, will run through the peak summer season until September 14, 2026. By providing a weekend-friendly schedule, the airline is positioning Zurich as the ultimate destination for both the “Friday-to-Monday” city breaker and the long-haul adventurer looking to explore the deeper reaches of the Swiss cantons.

Strategic Connectivity and Alpine Access

Zurich is often characterized as a sterile financial hub, but travelers know better. It is a city where world-class museums sit alongside crystal-clear lake baths, and where the snow-capped peaks of the Alps are always visible on the horizon.

Chris Tibbett, Aviation Director at AGS Airports (the operator of Glasgow Airport), expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership:

“We’re delighted to welcome Edelweiss to Glasgow Airport. This route not only offers our passengers direct access to one of Europe’s most charming cities but also provides seamless connectivity via its efficient Zurich hub. The addition of Edelweiss strengthens our long-standing partnership with the Lufthansa Group.”

The “hub” factor is a key part of this news. Zurich Airport is a major gateway for the Lufthansa Group, meaning Scottish passengers can now easily connect to a vast network of destinations across Africa, Asia, and the Americas with just one stop.

Flight Schedule & Experience

The new route will be served by an Airbus A320 aircraft, offering a comfortable 2-hour and 20-minute flight time. For those looking for a modern flying experience, Edelweiss has also announced plans to equip its fleet with Starlink high-speed internet, ensuring that your Alpine holiday can be shared on social media before you even touch down.

A Boost for Scottish Tourism

This isn’t just a “one-way” win for Scots heading south. The service is expected to bring a significant influx of Swiss tourists to the West of Scotland. For a Swiss audience, Glasgow represents a gateway to the Highlands, world-famous golf courses, and a burgeoning food and drink scene.

The announcement comes during a period of rapid growth for Glasgow Airport, which has recently secured other high-profile routes, including the return of United Airlines’ direct service to New York (Newark) for 2026.

The Human Touch: Why Zurich Matters

Beyond the boardroom and the balance sheets, this route is about human connection. It’s about the Scottish climber who can now be at the base of the Eiger by dinner time. It’s about the business professional who can close a deal in the morning and be back in Glasgow for their child’s football game.

Zurich offers a lifestyle that resonates with the Scottish spirit—a mix of urban grit, high culture, and a deep, abiding love for the great outdoors. Whether it’s swimming in the Limmat River during a heatwave or exploring the Lindt Home of Chocolate, the “Direct to Zurich” tag is a badge of accessibility that Glasgow has long deserved.
