Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the Philippines’ primary aviation gateway, is entering a new era as it advances a sweeping transformation aimed at redefining the passenger experience. Handling more than 50 million travelers each year, NAIA plays a critical role in connecting the country to the world. In 2024, the responsibility for operating and modernising the airport was entrusted to NNIC, a subsidiary of the San Miguel Group, following the approval of an ambitious long-term concession. Backed by a planned investment of US$3 billion, the project sets out to elevate NAIA into a modern, efficient and globally competitive hub that meets the demands of future air travel.

A cornerstone of this transformation is the complete overhaul of immigration processing through the adoption of cutting-edge biometric technology. Designed to reduce congestion and eliminate lengthy queues, the new system introduces a fast, intuitive and highly secure way for passengers to clear immigration. By leveraging advanced solutions from Amadeus, travellers can now complete the entire immigration process in under 20 seconds, marking a significant shift from traditional manual checks.

The technology integrates biometric identity verification with sophisticated document authentication, ensuring that each passenger’s identity is accurately confirmed before they proceed. This process is supported by real-time monitoring capabilities, enabling authorities to maintain high security standards without slowing down passenger flow. Only travellers who have been fully validated are cleared to continue their journey, striking a careful balance between safety and efficiency.

At the heart of the operation is the Amadeus Seamless Journey Platform, which coordinates every step of the immigration experience. The platform connects seamlessly with the backend systems of the Philippines’ border authorities, allowing for smooth data exchange, rapid decision-making and consistent oversight. By orchestrating the process end to end, the platform reduces operational complexity while enhancing reliability and transparency.

The rollout of the biometric immigration system has been carefully phased to align with ongoing terminal upgrades. As of December 2025, the first set of 24 biometric eGates has already been brought into service, offering passengers a glimpse of the airport’s future-ready approach. These initial installations have laid the groundwork for wider adoption, providing valuable operational insights ahead of full deployment.

Looking ahead, an additional 54 biometric eGates are scheduled to be installed in early 2026, coinciding with the completion of major terminal refurbishment works. Once fully operational, the expanded network of eGates is expected to dramatically increase processing capacity, reduce waiting times during peak travel periods and deliver a smoother arrival experience for both domestic and international passengers.

Through this combination of large-scale infrastructure investment and advanced digital innovation, NAIA’s modernisation programme signals a decisive step forward for Philippine aviation. The introduction of biometric immigration not only enhances security and efficiency but also reinforces the airport’s ambition to become a world-class gateway, capable of supporting growing passenger volumes while delivering a faster, safer and more seamless journey for millions of travellers each year.

The rollout of biometric immigration at Manila International Airport marks a pivotal step in its journey toward becoming a modern, globally competitive aviation hub. By combining large-scale infrastructure investment with advanced biometric solutions from Amadeus, NAIA is addressing long-standing challenges around congestion, security and passenger flow. As the full deployment of eGates is completed, the airport is set to deliver a faster, safer and more seamless border experience, reinforcing its role as a future-ready gateway for millions of travellers entering and leaving the Philippines.
