Juneyao Air has taken a major step in expanding regional air connectivity with the successful arrival of its first scheduled flight from Shanghai to Tawau, opening a new chapter in travel links between China and the Malaysian state of Sabah. The launch of this direct service marks an important milestone for both destinations, reflecting growing demand for seamless international travel and reinforcing Sabah’s position on the global tourism map.
The newly introduced route is set to operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, offering a total capacity of 180 seats per flight. Designed to serve the expanding leisure travel market from China, the service is expected to stimulate stronger tourism flows, foster closer cultural ties and encourage greater people-to-people exchanges between Shanghai and eastern Malaysia. By providing a direct connection, the route significantly reduces travel time and enhances convenience for travellers seeking new experiences in Southeast Asia.
The inaugural flight was officially welcomed at Tawau Airport by key representatives from Malaysia’s tourism and aviation sectors. Among those present were Darryl Hamzah from Tourism Malaysia, Rehan Shafiq Azizan of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, and Shirly Ho from the Sabah Tourism Board. They were joined by Simon Ng of Ground Team Red Sdn Bhd, the appointed ground handling partner for Juneyao Air. Their presence underscored the strong collaboration between airline partners, airport authorities and tourism stakeholders in supporting the route’s successful launch.
This new scheduled service forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen inbound travel from China, which remains one of Malaysia’s most important tourism source markets. Improved air access to East Malaysia is a key focus within this strategy, as destinations such as Sabah continue to gain international attention for their natural beauty, biodiversity and authentic cultural offerings. Tawau, in particular, plays a crucial role as a gateway to Sabah’s east coast, connecting visitors to world-famous marine attractions and eco-tourism hotspots.
From Tawau, travellers can easily access Semporna and its surrounding islands, widely regarded as some of the finest diving and island destinations in the region. Crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs and rich marine life have positioned the area as a top choice for underwater enthusiasts, while inland adventures, wildlife encounters and indigenous cultural experiences add further depth to Sabah’s tourism appeal. The direct Shanghai–Tawau link is expected to make these experiences more accessible to Chinese travellers seeking distinctive and nature-driven holidays.
China’s contribution to Malaysia’s tourism growth continues to gain momentum. Between January and November 2025, Malaysia recorded 4.3 million visitor arrivals from China, representing a strong year-on-year increase of 25.9 per cent. This robust performance highlights the resilience and importance of the Chinese market and reinforces its central role in Malaysia’s long-term tourism development plans, including the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026.
The introduction of the Shanghai–Tawau route directly supports the objectives of Visit Malaysia 2026 by enhancing international accessibility and expanding flight connectivity beyond traditional entry points. Stronger air links to East Malaysia are expected to sustain tourism growth, encourage repeat visitation and elevate Sabah’s profile as a must-visit destination for international travellers. Increased connectivity also helps distribute tourism benefits more evenly across the country, supporting local communities and tourism-related businesses.
Beyond improved access, the additional flight capacity is anticipated to boost visitor spending and stimulate demand for accommodation, transport, dining and tour services. Travellers arriving from China will have greater opportunities to experience Malaysia’s diverse attractions, from pristine islands and rainforests to vibrant festivals, unique culinary traditions and the warm hospitality the country is known for.
Tourism Malaysia has expressed full support for Juneyao Air in the launch of this new service and looks forward to working closely with the airline on joint promotional efforts. Through targeted marketing and collaborative campaigns in Shanghai and surrounding regions, both parties aim to showcase Malaysia’s wide range of travel experiences and inspire more travellers to explore Sabah and beyond. The Shanghai–Tawau route stands as a strong symbol of growing cooperation, shared confidence in tourism recovery and a forward-looking vision for regional air connectivity.
